Who knows Hugelkultur?

Do you know Hugelkultur? Pronounced "hoo-gul culture," this method of raised beds uses logs and wood material underneath the soil as a moisture collector to help with watering efficiency, recycle materials in the garden, and add beneficial fungus and microrganisms.

Check this link for Permaculture construction of hugelkultur beds.

At Cedaroak, our woods and grounds are rich with right ingredients for a Hugel bed. During our Fourth Grade Work party, we sent the kids on a scavenger hunt to find logs and sticks to construct our bed. Our crew dug a 3 foot-wide trench in the shape of two L's, lined the bottom with logs, layered deadfall branches and twigs, filled the space with straw, then covered the whole thing with soil.

PAST PROJECTS

Gravel on the Fitness Trail

Thanks to our First Grade Work Party, we patched the trouble spots where runners were ankle deep in puddles. The rainy work day was perfect for searching out those spots. We had many helping hands, big and small, on this project.
